an internet pop thing since 2005. phila pa.
The photo above is by Rebecca Cairns. I’ve been kind of mesmerized by it all morning. I’ve also been pretty mesmerized by the fact that it’s March 26th and I still had to wear a heavy coat, scarf, and gloves this morning and still felt like my face was going to fall of by the time I got into work. Such crap.
But I’ve been listening to a few things this week that have been keeping spirits pretty high! I’m going to put them here, in a list, for your clicking and listening pleasure. Stay warm! It’s Spring, afterall.
Linda Guilala “Verano”Generously noisy, with layers of glistening keys as dream topping. The whole of Xeristar is pretty A+ in my book, but this is a great place to start!
Christina Vantzou “Super Interlude Pt.2” (video, live @ STUK)If you haven’t stumbled upon it yet, Christina Vantzou’s new sophomore LP No.2 is brilliant and gorgeous and perfect for bedtime/mornings. This song comes from her first record (No.1), which I have been listening to a lot, too, after falling in love with No.2 recently.
Ghost Gum “Never”Of all the new noisy Philly bands popping up lately, Ghost Gum’s effects and reverb-soaked melodies make them an easy favorite. In a simplified sense, it’d be pretty safe to say that if you’re down with JGRO, Ghost Gum are definitely for you. But after a few listens, things like early Velocity Girl, The Charlottes, and The Nightblooms begin to come to mind, too. I don’t mean to namedrop too hard, but that’s kind of how good this is.
Island Twins “Over You”Speaking of hyper-melodic, there’s a new Island Twins record out and the riffs are still as infectious and hummable as they ever were. “Over You” in particular is almost frustratingly difficult to get past it’s so damn catchy. If it were food it would be mozzarella sticks. If it were a disease it would definitely spread to Madagascar. Play it foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Tired of writing! Bye!
