Moped "Cheap Strings"

Moped
Cheap Strings

Back in 1996 a modest New Jersey three-piece named Moped released one of the best—and certainly one of the least heard—indierock records of the 90s. ‘It Won’t Sound Any Better Tomorrow’, released care of the iconic (to me) Australian label Summershine, walks a very thin line between big-as-a-house riffs and brilliantly poppy melodies; a bit of prerequisite on Summershine, anyway. Aside from the maniacal ramblings of “Bangs And Booms”, “Cheap Strings” is really the only moment on the record where they stop for a bit of a breath. It’s treble-heavy, melodically-strummed verses recall Versus at their most successfully melancholic, AND YET, this song still rises to the top for me. It sometimes makes me wish they’d stopped for a few more breathers.

Anyone reading this blog would do very well to track down this record!
