Old Lacy Bed "Coastlands"
Coastlands
It’s always so nice these days to stumble upon some truly indiepop happenings. For me, it seemed perhaps the “scene,” as it were, really peaked back sometime around 2008. At that time the online indiepop community was THRIVING and it was a beautiful thing. You don’t see that quite as much lately, for a manifold of reasons, but it only makes it that much more special to find something like Ano(t)raks! The spirit of indiepop is alive and smiling inside this new months-old netlabel from Japan. The music, the aesthetics, the warmth—it all feels so refreshing and just right.
Ano(t)raks’ first release was a lovely EP from The Paellas, whom also appear on the very wonderful ‘Soon’ compilation that has just introduced me to label. The only name I recognized upon first look was Post Modern Team (whom I’ve gushed about here before), so I was rightfully excited to hear some new things. I’ve fallen in love with ‘Soon’ from beginning to end and it gives me so much hope. It’s sweetness and light through and through, trading in-the-clouds melancholy for a sugar rush and back again, but always aiming for the heart. Current favorites “Coastlands” by Old Lacy Bed and “Couldn’t Remember” by Boyish represent well the paths I expect the label to continue to tread in the future and I can’t wait!
