The Free Design “The Proper Ornaments”
I cannot stop listening to this song today!

As the days start to grow increasingly colder my interest in dreamy soundscapes also tends to grow exponentially. Back in the Summertime I may have passed on London-based Pale Seas, but right now it’s taking all of my effort to not run back to bed and put this this song on repeat! Their debut 7” will be out in March on Japan’s Fastcut Records, as well as Fear & Records in the UK! For fans of reverb and things that are generally very pretty.
If I had any previous stylistic assumptions about Katy Goodman’s La Sera (I did), they were all proven quite false the moment I heard the first note of the super fuzzed-out bass on her new single “Please Be My Third Eye”. Some melodically beautifully melding of Snoozer and Henry’s Dress comes to mind—with less feedback, of course. “Please Be My Third Eye” precedes LA Sera’s sophomore LP ‘Sees The Light’, which will be be out March 27th on Hardly Art!
Obviously I don’t listen to new music all the time—in fact most of the time I’m not—so in addition to posting the new things swirling around in my head, I like to sometimes post some of the old. I don’t know if it’s the Winter in general, or the fact that there was a pinch of the snow the other evening, but I’ve been in a Field Mice mode that I haven’t found myself immersed in in actual years. They’ll always be one of my most favorite bands and it’s been a nice change of pace as I truly don’t listen to them all that much these days. Anyway, this song, “Annoint,” is probably my favorite Field Mice tune, yet it was never officially released. The only recording of it I am aware of is from their 1990 Peel session and it is a gorgeous pop song that builds into some really fantastic noise. Another notable track from that session is the really wonderful recording of “Fresh Surroundings”!
Happy New Year, pals! It’s the start of a new year, but also a new month—and that means a new monthly mix! This month’s mix includes a few new things that I’ve fallen pretty in love with, as well as a some older records that have been in pretty heavy rotation for me lately. Every now and then I go through month-long phases of not being able to put down Dislocation Dance’s ‘Midnight Shift’. This is one of those months. Anyway, I’ll probably be mentioning some of the newer stuff at more length later this month, so keep an eye out! Happy listening and happy new year!

New Video from The Sunny Street for their beautiful song “Mottram”. It’s a little treasure of mid-morning melancholy and I’m in love with it. They have a new record, ‘Hidden For Decades,’ out on Plastilina Records right now and if you like your pop songs dreamy, adorable, and catchy then you should most certainly check it out!
Following a demo that’s been floating around for a little while now, Philadelphia’s Lockets have released a new track from their forthcoming LP. “Camera Shy” is an A+ beautiful dream pop gem, and like all good, dreamy things—it’s covered in reverb. The outro is just the icing on the cake of a song that I find is best listened to on repeat, for hours. So go do that. Now!
After revisiting Je Suis Animal’s perfect 2008 record ‘Self-Taught Magic From A Book’ last night I decided to see what they’ve been doing for the past three years. As it turns out they’ve been mostly quiet—which is a bit sad because that record may just be one of my favorites from the past five years—BUT, it seems they did come out of hiding for a moment to contribute a new track to Perfect Pop’s 2011 compilation ‘Tweest and Shout’. I’m crossing my fingers that “Tale From The Sea” is a sign of more to come because it is quite the gem.
